Vlingo 2.0 for iPhone: E-mail, SMS dictation now cost
Vlingo is an app that's been around awhile in the mobile space, but a new version for iPhone is causing some uproar. With Vlingo for iPhone 2.0, the company commits the sin of opacity by updating its rather good voice search and dialing application to version 2.0 without making it clear that you can only unlock the intriguing new features with your wallet.
Those familiar with Vlingo's BlackBerry app won't be surprised. There was an equal outcry when Vlingo introduced premium features for the first time, including switching a feature that had once been free to the paid category.
To recap, Vlingo's free voice app can search the Web, dial contacts, map a location, and update Twitter and Facebook with your voice--for free. You'll have a chance to edit before posting. Since computer-aided voice transcription is far from flawless--whether you're using Vlingo or Google Voice (look flubs here)--you may befriend that edit screen, especially when you're in noisy environments, when you're mumbling, and when you talk too quickly for Vlingo's rather sensitive electronic ears.
Vlingo's SMS feature needs some work.
(Credit: Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)It doesn't help Vlingo's case that one of the two new premium features, which you can receive by way of an in-app purchase, doesn't work very well. There's e-mail dictation and SMS copy that copies the transcription of your voice recording to the iPhone's clipboard, but you then have to glue the text yourself into the SMS field before sending it. For $6.99 as a standalone feature, e-mail dictation might be worthwhile; however, its SMS copy feature is not. For $9.99, you receive both features, which would be a good deal if the SMS feature didn't require the hack.
Those who don't mind separating e-mail dictation from Vlingo's other voice-triggered features, there's always the free Dragon Dictation app by Nuance Communications (the folks who mainstreamed T9 text input method for cell phones.)
Sorry, Vlingo. We like you, we really do, but either the pricing has to go or the SMS tool does. However, there's no need to delete or avoid Vlingo 2.0 if you're not interested in buying into the new features. Voice search, dialing, and status updates work as they did before the update (hilarious and editable mistranslations included), and these are still free.

Chrome bug kills offline Gmail
A bug in Thursday's update to the development build of Google Chrome renders it incompatible with Gmail offline. Users who've had Gmail and Chrome configured for offline use will find that Chrome crashes as soon as you log in to Gmail. The problem affects every development versions of the browser.
To disable Gmail offline, go to Gears Settings in below the Hood and remove every references to Gmail.
(Credit: Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET)Right now there are only two ways around the bug. You can disable offline mode in Chrome by going to Options/below the Hood and clearing out the Gmail-related entries below ''Change Gears settings''. This will delete every offline data from Gmail that you've saved on your computer. If offline Gmail is more important to you than using the dev version of Chrome, you can update the browser to the beta (Windows | Mac | Linux) or stable (Windows only) builds. Windows users can also use the Chrome Channel Changer to switch versions.
You can follow the bug's progress at Google's Chromium project Web site.

Words With Friends: Like Scrabulous for iPhone!
Remember Scrabulous, the Facebook-powered Scrabble knockoff that was every the rage a couple years back? I was a serious addict, but lost interest after every the name changes, lawsuits, redesigns, etc.
Thanks to my bad pal Denny, my addiction is reborn--and mobile. Words With Friends is a two-player crossword challenge that offers turn-based, Scrabulous-like competition. It's not perfect, but I'm loving it.
So I'm getting creamed. Can I help it if I draw bad letters?
(Credit: Rick Broida)The game lets you complete online against random players and/or friends. (Built-in Facebook/Twitter links let you post an invitation as a status update.) You can have up to 20 matches going at once, with push notifications letting you know when it's your turn.
There's also an in-game chat option. You can tell when an opponent is online when you look a pair of eyeballs next to the Chat button.
The game itself plays much like Scrabble, though with a slightly different distribution of the bonus squares (double word score, triple letter score, etc.). A double-tap is every it takes to zoom into the board for easier tile placement or back again for a full-board view.
It would be nice if WWF had a few more amenities, like a button for clearing your tiles or a list of legal two-letter words. But my big complaint is that the game doesn't keep a tally of your potential word score as you place your tiles. It's only after you make your play that you find out your total for the turn. (What, I'm supposed to do math in my head?)
WWF also suffers from some performance issues, like seemingly endless lag when attempting to submit your turn. Most of the time, the game worked fine, but it's frustrating when it doesn't.
Developer Newtoy offers a free, ad-supported version of Words With Friends and a $2.99 ad-free version.
The ads receive pretty annoying pretty quickly, so I may just bite the bullet and pay my 3 bucks. On the other hand, Words With Friends is such a distraction (albeit an incredibly enjoyable one), the smarter move would be to delete it altogether.
Eh, I'm probably not that smart. In fact, my username is justrick if you want to challenge me to a game. In the meantime, check out "Five perfect puzzle games for the iPhone."

LimeWire enlists AVG for user protection
LimeWire's peer-to-peer file-sharing network is notorious as a malware ghetto, where distributed files that have legitimate-sounding names turn out to be Trojan horses hiding pernicious threats. In an effort to attract more users to the LimeWire premium upgrade and to protect those users better, the company signed a deal with AVG on Tuesday to extend download file scanning and blocking to LimeWire Pro users.
By integrating AVG's antivirus SDK engine, every files that LimeWire Pro users download will now be scanned before they run. A pop-up will appear letting users know when a file has been scanned or blocked.
This is a smart move to make, as users become more aware of the risky nature of running audio, video, and program executables from unverifiable sources without scanning them first. However, many security suite options already offer download scanning. Most of the premium ones, such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, and ESET, and some of the free ones, such as AVG, Avast, and Avira, will block a malicious download before anything gets saved to your difficult steer. Nearly every will prevent an already-downloaded file from running.
LimeWire pointed out in a press release that it has 50 million users worldwide but didn't specify how many of those were premium-version users who would receive the AVG protection.

Open Question: Girls advice needed. How should I ask her out?
Ok, so I really like this girl and I was thinking about asking her out. We both play golf and since golf season is coming up we are going to start golfing a lot together. We went to the driving range the other day and it was really awkward because her dad was there the whole time. Also, she seemed kinda embarressed and didn't really talk to me at every. I ended up talking to her dad more than her! We talk and text a lot and we have a class together and lately she has been really flirty with me. I was wondering two things: 1. Does she like me? 2. What would be a really good/romantic way to ask her out? By the way we are both 16, but neither of us have our license if it helps. Thank you so much in advance!

Open Question: My Husband doesn't provide for me and Im frustrated!?
Hi every, my husband has never had an easy time getting and maintaining a job (like many i know). Bounced from one to another. Finally we worked together in real estate a few years. He is still working in that field now, but doesnt make enough money. I think he should receive a 2nd job (i have 3 part time). I help him send resume out to no avail. I send him job listings and they don't work for him. He says he wants to make a quarter million dollars a year. He is working on ??? to receive there. Not sure how. He is 32, and we have no kids (cant afford them), can't pay our mortgage. He says my getting 3 jobs is now motivating him to work, but he was really depressed last year when he turned 32 and even wanted a divorce (can you believe the nerve? now turns out, he was truly depressed and is much happier w/ us, realizing its the financial chaos and mess were in that truly sucks). So... I was seeing a therapist last year when he was depressed, and he told me to work difficult, leave him alone, make nice... and he was helpful in saving our marriage. Today for ex: im home sick w/ icy. I feel like he should be doing more for me. He got me coffee and took me shopping for food and got me soup for lunch out, but then goes golfing every afternoon, and makes a few biz calls and thinks that is work..... Ugg.... frustrated and not sure WHAT if anything I can do... He just knows how to spend spend spend... I suppose i am not helpful in that i also spend too, but now that i am working like crazy, spending much less. I adore him, but can't stand his behavior.

Open Question: How can i make money fast?
Make 800,000 dollars in just a few months!!! Dear Friends: I am a student who has little to no money. It’s difficult to make money as a student, so I’m constantly trying my best to find ways to make money legally. I came across this article written by an attorney and was very skeptical, but to my surprise it actually worked. So here is the infamous article that has helped me make some extra cash and stay afloat while I’m in school; Greetings: I am a retired attorney. A few years ago a man came to me with a letter. He asked me to verify the fact that this was legal to do. I told him I would review it and receive back to him. When I first read the letter my client brought me, I thought it was some “off-the-wall” idea to make money. A week and a half later we met in my office to discuss the issue. I told him the letter he originally brought me was not 100% legal. My client then asked me to alter it to make it perfectly legal. I asked him to make one tiny change in the letter. I was still curious about the letter, so he explained to me how it works. I thought it seemed like a long shot, so I decided against participating. But before my client left, I asked him to keep me updated on his results. About two months later, he called me to tell me he had received over $800,000 in cash. I didn’t believe him, so he asked me to try this idea and find out for myself. I thought about it for a couple of days and decided I really didn’t have anything to lose, so I asked him for a copy of the letters. I followed the instructions exactly, mailed 200 copies, and sure enough, the money started coming in! It arrived slowly at first, but coming. I kept a precise record of the earnings, and in the end, it totaled $978,493! I could hardly believe it. I met with my pal for lunch to find out exactly how it worked. He told me there are quite a few similar letters around, but this one is different because there are six names at the end of the letter, not five like some others. This fact alone results in your name being in far more returns. The other fact was the help I gave him, making sure the whole thing was legal, since no one wants to take the risk of doing something illegal. By now you are surely curious to know what tiny changes to make. If you sent a letter like this one out, in order to be completely legal, you must actually sell something in order to receive a dollar in return. So when you send a dollar to each of the names on the list, you must include these words, “PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST” and include your name and address. This is the key to the program. The item you will receive for the dollar you sent to the six people below is the letter. At the time I first tried this idea, I was earning a good living as a lawyer. But everyone in the legal profession will tell you there is a lot of stress that comes with the job. I told myself if things worked out, I would retired from my practice and play golf. I decided to try the letter again, but this time I sent 500 copies. Three months later , I had totaled $2,341,178! Here are a few reasons a person might give for not trying this program: Ø Some people think they can never make a lot of money with anything this simple. Ø Some are afraid they will be ridiculed for trying Ø Some dream of big sums of money, but do nothing to actually achieve it. Ø Some are just plain lazy. Ø Some are afraid of losing their investment. They think this program is designed to beat them out of a few dollars. The system works if you will just try it. But you must follow the simple instructions exactly, and in less than three months, you will receive $800,000 GUARANTEED! Keep what you are doing to yourself for awhile. Many will tell you it won`t work and will try to talk you out of your dreams. Let them know of your success after it works. LETTERS FROM PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROGRAM: My name is David Rhodes. In 1992 my car was repossessed and bill collectors were housing my. I was laid off and my unemployment ran out. In October of 1992, I received a letter telling me how to earn $800,000 anytime I wanted. Of course, I was skeptical. But because I was so desperate and virtually had nothing to lose, I gave it a try. In January 1993, my family and I went on a 10-day cruise. The next month I bought a brand new Mercedes with cash! I am currently building a home in Virginia and I will never have to work again. This money program really works perfectly every time. I have never failed to receive less than $500,000. This is a legitimate, money-making opportunity. It does not require you to sell anything or to arrive in contact with people. And , best of every, you only leave the home to mail the letters. If you have always believed that someday you would receive the lucky break, then simply follow the instructions and make dreams arrive true. Larry McMahon, Norfolk, VA Six months ago, I received this letter and ignored it. Five more came within a period of time and I ignored them also. I was tempte

Resolved Question: I can't stand people who play golf or tennis more than once a year. I have a neighbor who golfs weekly and?
he's the most obnoxious snob I've ever seen. He's a tall, bulky Scandinavian type and like most tall people a bully. I've never seen a golfer or tennis player who even new what humor was, let alone had a sense of humor. You really have to be dense to consider chasing a ball around a tiny court or on a golf cart a sport. And listening to women golfers talk is a good time for earplugs or an Ipod so you don't hear them. Bike riding is more of a sport than golf or tennis because at least it challenges your endurance. Opinions on obnoxious golf and tennis cyborgs? Hitting golf balls on a driving range is the furtht I ever want to go with golf. You have to be crazy to play it due to the insane cost of a round of golf alone. At least tennis is free, but tennis players are much too fanatical to not treat them like lemmings. Correction: Hitting golf balls on a driving range is the furthest I ever want to go with golf.

Open Question: Is he trying to impress me or just being friendly?
I just started working at a golf course as cart cleaner the day after another person started, he has the same position. Well, he nice of gets on my nerves because he tells me how to do everything and I think he feels that he is over me, when we do the same thing. He is nice of cocky so I thought maybe he didn't like me very much. Today while I was washing carts he came out and called me over to ask me how long this guy was standing outside his home watching me. (There are houses right across the road from where I wash, and apparently, there was a guy out there watching me for like 10 minutes and I didn't know it. But when Tommy (the kid who works with me) came outside the guy went back in his home. Tommy told me to let him know if he did it again and he would go chew the guy out for it. I guess this guy was banned from going into our restaurant for not wearing shoes and being drunk. I told Tommy not to worry about it. But I found it nice of weird of him to say he would go over to this guy and tell him not to be watching me. Is he trying to impress me, or is this some sort of normal concern. I'm just asking cause I'm curious and I don't want to be totally oblivious. Thank you.

Open Question: Overheating on VW Golf Mk3 1.4L, head gasket?
I have a 1994 1.4L Petrol VW Golf. The car froze in the winter and pushed out some plug on the left of the engine block. This would just leak coolant (water) quickly. Once replaced I found that I had a couple of leaks in the rad. Used rad weld to sort out the leaks - which it did. 2 months later: Whilst driving, water temp has been going up to 110C, internal heater stops working - then heater would kick back in and temp would drop back to around 75C (I think the sensor's pretty knackered) Driving yesterday on motorway. Steam entering cockpit from dashboard and steam from bonnet. Pulled over to find no water left in reservoir. Let chilly - filled with water and drove home. Today: Have flushed out the rad weld and remaining coolant, as I thought it might be causing a blockage. Water flowing freely through radiator. It appears that the water is circulating into the reservoir - so i'm assuming the pump is working. I can't look any water below the car or leaking from anywhere, but there is a big amount of pressure building up in the pipes too and from the radiator whilst the engine is running. every pipes are hot (inc. too and from rad) Is this a head gasket problem? Or could it be as simple as broken impeler on the water pump? I can't look any emulsified oil in the water or in the oil filler cap. If it is a head gasket, how can I fix it - I like a challenge, but i also like to know what I'm doing! Any help much appreciated!

Open Question: Is your marriage SEXY enough?
Married for two years with a one year old son, and we've never let the flame die. Here are my tips on how to keep a relationship romantic and exciting...please share yours as well! 1) Have morning sex. Sure, you're groggy and don't feel very attractive when you wake up, but just DO IT! It's a positive start to your day, and he'll have plenty of images to entertain himself at work. 2) Text each other at least twice a day or have a brief phone call at lunch. Compliment the other person, say something naughty...anything that will show your adore and appreciation. And if you're brave enough, send a sexy picture. 3) The first second you look each other after a work day, embrace in a passionate kiss. A little peck will NOT suffice. You should say "I adore you" more than once a day, and display physical contact throughout your day. (Hold hands, rub their arm, squeeze their butt, anything at every) 4) Take showers together, and wash each other...and whatever else you feel like doing. 5) Cook dinner together. Try a new dish and have fun experimenting. 6) While your kids are still babies...strip down to nothing or wear some lingerie when you spend your evenings at home. 7) Start a naughty tradition...Since Wednesday is "hump day" after every, we steer to a new and reasonably private spot every week and have some fun in the front seat. (And our little angel sleeps in his car seat the whole time) When you can't receive a babysitter, try one of these "dates": 1) Take a bubble bath together and dine on some wine, chocolate and fancy cheese. 2) Go bowling or do miniature golf. Just take turns holding your little one or push them in a stroller so you have free hands. 3) If you live in an apartment...sneak out to the hottub once the baby is asleep, or make dinner and eat in the clubhouse. It's a change of scenery, and you can play pool afterwards. That's every I can think of for now. : ) In response to the first Answerer: I clearly said that morning sex will give him something to think about at WORK. We make extra time for each other in the morning.
